Accessible through a narrow valley between Hiunchuli and Machapuchare peaks, the sanctuary remained unexplored by outsiders until 1956. Shielded by high mountains, the sanctuary receives only seven hours of sunlight per day at the height of summer. Renowned for its unparalleled beauty and spiritual significance, the Annapurna Sanctuary attracts trekkers from across the globe. The journey is facilitated by our local Nepalese staff, whose expertise and dedication ensure a safe and enriching experience. In recent years, the number of trekkers visiting the Sanctuary has increased significantly, partly due to its role as a base for climbing the Annapurna peaks and all trip arrange by Treks Himalaya where we permit share.
The Annapurna Sanctuary is now part of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, which imposes restrictions on activities such as deforestation, firewood collection, and grazing. The trek traverses diverse ecosystems, from lush tropical jungles of rhododendron and bamboo on south-facing slopes to drier, cooler climates resembling the Tibetan Plateau on north-facing slopes. The trek passes through remote villages, terraced fields, and forests of bamboo and chestnut trees, offering glimpses into the daily lives of local villagers. Our ultimate destination is the heart of the mountainous amphitheater, where Annapurna Base Camp awaits. This sacred sanctuary was once revered by the Gurung people, who believed it to be inhabited by various deities from Hinduism, Buddhism, and ancient animistic traditions. The towering peak of Machapuchare, known as the “Fish Tail,” was believed to be the abode of the Hindu god Shiva, with its snow-capped summit likened to divine incense. Traditionally, the Gurung people prohibited the entry of certain foods and individuals into the sanctuary, further enhancing its spiritual significance and preserving its natural beauty for generations to come.
